Chi-Yu

CHI-YU MO

Chi-Yu graduated with First Class Honours and a PhD in Chemistry from St John’s College Cambridge, before turning to a musical career.

After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, where he is now a Professor and Fellow of the RAM, Chi-Yu was appointed Principal E flat Clarinet of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, before joining the London Symphony Orchestra as Sub-Principal in 1998. In 2008 he was appointed Principal E Flat Clarinet of the LSO.

Outside the LSO, he has played as Principal with the RLPO, CBSO, Northern Sinfonia, BBC Symphony and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestras and was also the Principal Clarinet with the Asia Philharmonic Orchestra for three years, including performances as soloist under Myung-Whun Chung. In the last two seasons, he has performed on tours and recordings with both Lucerne Festival Orchestra and the World Orchestra for Peace.

As a Chamber Musician, Chi-Yu has played with Pianists Roger Vignoles and Piers Lane, as well as the Nash Ensemble and Endymion. Further afield, he has performed with the Worldwide Chinese Woodwind Soloists Octet in the NCPA May Festival in Beijing, and his LSO clarinet colleagues at Buffet-Crampon, Tokyo.
